Discover a simple method to review your finances every three months and adjust what no longer works in your daily life.
If you've been trying to control your money for a few months and feel like things are slipping away again, you're not alone. The reality is that a budget you set up in January may have nothing to do with how you live in October.
## Why reviewing every three months makes a difference
Doing a quarterly review lets you see patterns that don't show up in daily life. For example, that increase in your electricity bill during the hottest months or the extra transportation costs when you started going out more.
What has worked for me is marking three fixed dates on the calendar: March, June, and September. Those moments give you enough time for the data to be useful without turning it into an overwhelming monthly obligation.
## What to look at exactly in each review
You don't need to review every transaction. Three clear blocks are enough: actual income received, fixed expenses that changed, and variable expenses that got out of control. With just those three points you already have enough to make decisions.
Watch out for this: many times the problem isn't that you're spending too much, but that your income varied and you never updated your goals. If this month you earned less than expected, adjusting your savings goal is smarter than punishing yourself for not meeting it.
## How to adjust without throwing everything away
The trick is to change as little as possible. If you see that the food category went up 15%, try first cutting just one meal out per week before redoing the entire budget. Small changes stick better than complete overhauls.
That said, there are times when it is worth starting over. When you change jobs, move, or a new person joins the household, the quarterly review becomes the perfect time to redesign from scratch.
## Before you close this tab
If you've been feeling like your budget no longer represents you but you keep using it out of habit, it's not laziness — it's that no one told you that numbers also age. That can be fixed.
_Pick a date this same month and mark it now: just three numbers to review will tell you more than any perfect plan you never finish following through._
