Discover simple ways to plan expenses with what you already have without complicating your life.
If you've ever felt your money disappearing without knowing exactly where it went, you're not alone. Most of us start the month with good intentions and end up wondering where it all went.
The good news is that planning expenses doesn't require perfect spreadsheets or apps that charge monthly fees. It can be done with tools you already have that fit how you actually live.
## Why simple tools beat complicated ones
Many people try feature-packed apps and abandon them in two weeks. The problem isn't lack of willpower, it's that the tool doesn't fit your routine.
What has worked for me is starting with the most basic: the phone's notes app. Every time I spend something, I write it down right there. No weird categories or charts. Just date, amount and what it was for.
Pay attention to this: it doesn't have to be perfect. If you forget to note the coffee one day, it's fine. The idea is to build the habit of looking at your numbers at least once a week.
### For those starting from zero
If you've never tracked anything, start only with the big expenses: rent, food, transportation. Then add the smaller ones. Don't try to capture everything the first month.
### If you already have some practice
You can add a second note with your income and subtract expenses every Friday. This way you see the real balance left for the next half of the month.
## The receipt photo trick
Another tool I use a lot is the phone camera. When I pay something in cash or with card, I quickly take a photo of the receipt. At the end of the week I review them all together.
This prevents finding out at the end of the month that you spent twice as much on eating out as you thought.
## Before closing this tab
If you've tried several apps and none lasted, it's not that you're disorganized. It's that you were using a tool that didn't match how you live day to day.
_The best system is the one you can maintain even when the month turns out the opposite of what was planned._
